Breaking Bad

After watching the first episode of breaking bad I can imply that there are many gender roles throughout the episode.  One was that men should be the sole provider of the house.  In the first episode, Walter had to work two jobs in order to provide for his family and live comfortably.  While he worked two jobs, his wife did not seem to have a job at all.  Providing for his family became such an issue that he had no choice but to start cooking crack.  Another implied gender role was is that men shouldn't break under pressure.  When Walter found out he had cancer he did not react in the same way any of us would.  Not only that but he didn't tell his family in an effort to protect them.

  1. I saw that you placed many important scenes into your blog. Also you saw how there were many gender roles to how Walter's life is molded together.

However, you didn't explain why he is less of a man. You didn't compare him to anyone else in the show that would show a difference. Or the "true masculinity".

  2. I actually think that Walters terminal diagnosis was the push he needed to ‘man up’ in the stereotypical sense. He made a choice to think only of his family, and with nothing left to lose he was able to overcome the reservations and fears that had held him back previously. The comment you make about the perception of men not breaking under pressure I think defiantly applied to Walter but only after he is pushed to do ‘whatever it takes’ to make sure his family is taken care of.

  3. I like how you brought up the fact that Walter did not tell his family about his illness and his reaction to being told he had terminal lung cancer because it was the pivotal point of the episode. I believe that was the catalyst to his drastic change.

  4. i also saw walt not filling his gender roles in the beginning as well. Men are usually held to higher standard and asked to bring in a good amount of the money. Walt is obviously struggling working two jobs barely making enough to get by. this would hurt any males pride.
