A nation of welfare families

After reading A Nation of Welfare Families by Stephanie Coontz, you discover more on the history of government aid.  America ,which looks down on government aid today, has always received aid to help better themselves.  In the article it states that all throughout history families in america would receive aid wether they knew it or not.  People were able to buy 160 acres of land for $10 because of the Homestead Act of 1862.  They would also be able to buy a house for close to nothing because of the government GI's.  However in today's society it is looked down upon to receive welfare and government aid, which is very hypocritical considering that all throughout history we have been receiving some for of aid from the government.  I believe that it became looked down upon once there was diversity throughout the US (rich white people didn't want to give minorities their "hard earned" money).   Regardless the US still provides aid to families in need.  The system might need to be reformed but it still does benefit plenty of families that are hardly making it by.  One may criticize people for taking advantage of the welfare system, but have no idea how difficult it might be for the family receiving the checks to get by without them.

  1. I do agree with you. The welfare system does need to be reformed. There are too many people who abuse the system while the ones that don't and are barely getting through with welfare. I also agree that most people that work at the welfare desks are white people with no skills. If it wasn't for welfare, they wouldn't be working there. But I don't think its because they're racist, I just think they might be trained like that so people would stop applying for welfare.

  2. I agree with you, it should be reformed. My mom works at Costco and she tells the stories of "Baby Mama's" pulling their EBT cards out of their Louis Vuitton Wallet attached to the keys of their brand new Benz. People should be tested and checked up on when it comes to stuff like that.

  3. I recently read this article too, and I was so upset when I thought how people are ridicule now for getting help from government programs. When in reality almost every family either poor or middle class has been using government aid subconsciously or consciously. I feel like it is okay to get help once and a while to get back on your feet. But I don't appreciate how some people who already drive BMW and Mercedes vehicles being on welfare. That money they are receiving could go to a family who has to walk to get from point A to point B.

  4. I agree that the idea of receiving government aid is looked down upon in society today. I think though that we are affected by the same attitudes as our ancestors. Many people today fail to realize just how much assistance they themselves receive from programs other than welfare. Just one example of that is that of the student loan programs that the majority of college students take advantage of in one form or another. I’ve never had someone sneer at me because the government subsidized a portion of the interest on my student loans, much to the contrary I’ve taken pride in the fact that I pay my way through school. Government aid programs benefit far more than just those who qualify for assistance through welfare

  5. I agree with your idea. I also enjoyed reading it and learning about the history of government aid. I found it very interesting how cheap land was back then, but it was very expensive for them at the time. It is unfair how many people abused the system and did not think about the people who actually needed it.

  6. This is so true, because people now are discouraged to receive any welfare. It should not be discouraged and if a family needs it, then they should receive it without any judgment or hardships. Just because some people are not as well off as others they shouldn't be ashamed to look for help. The government HAS money allotted for welfare and that money should be used to help the people that need it.

  7. In this world of hypocrisy, there are people who do have motivations to do better with improvement and determination. Some Americans are not proud of receiving aid or funding from the Government. These people have drive and motivation. As long as Americans have this drive and determination to improve their spouse, themselves and children for the better, then these beings definitely should receive the government aid. Financial assistance is the most crucial when people need it the most. I order for us as a society to be accepted as the best nation on planet Earth, we need to educate our children that there is government assistance available for schooling, college and other programs. The ones who are struggling and in need of financial assistance would qualify and deserve it the most in order to make ends meet.
